Submission on the EU Ocean Research Strategy
Calcarea calls for focus on ocean-based carbon storage in European “ocean research and innovation strategy”
Calcarea recently made a submission to the EU Directorate-General for Research and Innovation’s (DGRI) call for evidence on the “future ocean and water research and innovation strategy.”
While ocean-based carbon storage via the accelerated weathering of limestone (AWL) has been a prominent process that has supported millions of dollars in scientifically robust voluntary carbon removal credit purchases, regulatory regimes have been slow to incorporate carbon storage methods aside from geologic sequestration.
Based on prior discussions with European regulators, we believe there is ample technical expertise to study and support the inclusion of AWL and ocean-based dissolved inorganic carbon storage across various EU carbon regulations. The European ocean research and innovation strategy provides an opportunity to review these processes and recommend appropriate changes to various carbon policy regimes (the EU ETs, FuelEU Maritime, and the Carbon Capture and Utilization Delegated Act), to allow for ocean-based carbon storage.
